Ask the CEO: First Jobs — The Washington Business Journal

David Tolson – Presidavid_08v2_webdent & CEO, DBT-Data “My first job was working on a dairy farm in Northeastern Pennsylvania as a teenager. It was a great experience. The work was hard and consistency was paramount. The cows had to be milked twice a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. For a farmer there are no excuses. The cows have to be milked whether you are sick, there is a death in the family, or it is a major holiday. The cows are the source of income for your family. They must be cared for. This experience has served me well in the data center business. The ‘cloud’ which in actuality is an operating data center crammed full of servers has to be up and running 24/7 365 days a year. Downtime is not an option. No excuses. To this day when I drive past a farm and smell silage, hay, or a freshly plowed field I get a smile on my face.”  wbj-300x162
